Thinking about installing solar panels at home? Making the move to solar is a great way to generate your own renewable electricity and make better use of the energy available from your home.
Before you request a quote, there are a few important things to consider. Every home is different, which is why a solar system should be designed around your individual property and energy needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
7 Questions to ask!
1. Is your roof suitable?
Roof orientation, available space, roof condition and shading from trees or nearby buildings can all affect how much electricity your panels generate. A south-facing roof can maximise generation, but east- and west-facing roofs can also work well.
2. Do solar panels work in Ireland?
Yes. Solar PV panels generate electricity from daylight, not just bright sunshine. While generation is higher during the brighter months, solar panels produce electricity throughout the year.
3. How many panels do you need?
There is no standard number that suits every home. The right system depends on your household electricity consumption, available roof space and when you typically use electricity. A properly sized system can help you make better use of the electricity your panels generate.
4. What about the SEAI grant?
Eligible homeowners can currently receive up to €1,800 towards solar PV through the SEAI Solar PV Grant in 2026. Importantly, you must have your grant approval in place before installation work begins.
5. Do you need a solar battery?
Not every home needs a battery, but it can be a useful addition. A battery stores surplus solar electricity generated during the day so you can use more of your own solar energy later, such as in the evening.
6. How much could you save?
Your potential savings will depend on your electricity usage, system size, roof and how much of your solar energy you use in the home. That’s why a good solar installer should assess your property rather than promise a one-size-fits-all saving.
7. What should you ask your installer?
Before choosing an installer, ask about expected annual generation, the total installation cost, warranties, maintenance and whether the proposed system is suitable for your home. SEAI also recommends checking that your installer is registered with SEAI.
